Browsing the catalogue
Browsing destinations and tour pages requires no personal data. This site uses no cookies, no advertising trackers and no third-party analytics.
A random technical identifier (a plain number, unconnected to your identity) is created in your browser and sent along with your device’s technical characteristics (screen size, system, language), in order to adapt the display and monitor service quality.
Playing a tour
The tour player records the data below. This recording is a condition of using the player: it is not optional, and you are informed before you start.
Why: tours are funded by local authorities and tourist offices, which in return receive attendance statistics. The same data lets us fix and improve the content. It is never sold, never used for advertising, and never combined with other sources.
| Data | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pseudonymous identifier and device identifier | At start | Link the steps of a single tour together |
| GPS position at the moment you tap start | At start, if the tour requires it | Check that you are at the starting point |
| Access code | At start, for a paid tour | Unlock the tour |
| Progress (points visited, tour completed) | During the tour | Attendance and completion statistics |
| Time spent on each point | When leaving a point | Spot steps that are too long or skipped |
| Quiz answers (choices made, right or wrong) | When leaving a point | Spot poorly worded questions |
| Media played (file, playback start and end) | During playback | Know which content is actually listened to |
| Distance travelled (in metres) | During the tour | Measure the distance actually walked |
| Battery level | During the tour | Detect tours that drain phones |
| Active-session signal | Every 5 minutes | Tell an ongoing tour from an abandoned one |
What never leaves your phone
Your GPS positions themselves are never transmitted: they are used inside your browser to sort points by distance, place you on the map and compute the distance travelled. Only that total, in metres, is sent.
Your tour save (points completed, quiz answers, progress) is kept in your browser’s local storage so you can resume where you left off. It disappears if you clear the site’s data.
Offline behaviour
If the network drops during a tour, events are queued in your browser and sent when connectivity returns. Each event carries a unique identifier that prevents duplicates.
Recipients and processors
Data is processed by Rendr Softworks on its own servers. Tour images, audio and video are delivered from RENDR’s delivery servers through temporary links valid for four hours.
The map is drawn from OpenStreetMap tiles: your browser therefore contacts their servers to download them, which discloses your IP address to them.
Partner local authorities receive aggregated statistics, never individual records.
Retention period
Tour records are kept without any time limit, so that attendance can be compared from one year to the next.
They are not attached to any account. The only identifier linking them together is a random number created by your browser: we cannot match it to any name, any email address, any account. And it does not last: your browser erases it by itself after a few days or weeks without a visit, and it disappears if you change device or clear the site’s data.
No GPS position is kept: the coordinates sent when you start are used solely to check that you are at the starting point, then discarded. Only the total distance travelled, in metres, is recorded.
Your rights
You have the right to access, rectify, erase and object to the data concerning you.
As no account is attached to your records, we cannot find them from your name or email address: only the technical identifier held by your browser makes the link. Write to care@rendr.fr and we will tell you where to find it. If your browser has already erased it, no link remains between you and those records.
You may also lodge a complaint with the French data protection authority, the CNIL (www.cnil.fr).
